Perfect paddling weather greeted us for the annual 7km race around Delphin Island, with nine crews competing for glory. Awaiting the crew with the fastest time was the illustrious dragon head trophy, and for the crew with the slowest time, a dragon’s tail!

The crews set off at two minute intervals and the chase was on to try and pass boats in front whilst not getting caught by boats behind!

ASD members and families came down to give us a great send off, with some supporters setting themselves up on bridges to take great action shots and shout encouragement to spur our crew on.

Our supporters were rewarded with the sight of us and four other crews rounding the final bend.  The final push was on, gritting our teeth as we dug deep, passing one crew and holding off one behind us as we crossed the finish line with not a breath to spare!

Congratulations to all the crew- drummer and sweep, and paddlers experienced and new- who put their hands up to take part in the race and gave their all to achieve a fantastic result of 35 minutes!

Go Adelaide Sea Dragons!!

For members who do not know me well, I began paddling in Ceduna (on the west coast of SA) with the Ceduna branch of Sea Dragons. We paddled on Murat Bay and occasionally did an “adventure paddle” across to Denial Bay and back (approximately 20 km round trip).

Although I enjoy the training paddles around Delphin Island and on the Port River, I am interested in paddling in other locations. And so the first of the “adventure paddles” happened on Saturday 18th July. Twelve ASD paddlers headed down the Port River to Barker Inlet. We paddled for about 1.25 hours which took us up into the St Kilda channel. The weather was perfect. The tide right for what we were doing. Winds less than 5 knots. Sun shining.

For most of us this was a brand new experience. For a few – John, Lee and Sandy, it was paddling a dragon boat versus a kayak/canoe. Gary chose to sit in the front of the boat for half the trip and worked well leading with Tracy. Rachel and I stroked the return journey and Tracy swept. It was great having John on board and he guided Tracy and I as to the best route around corners, what we might see.

The ship graveyard, mangroves, stingray, dolphins, the marinas and the slipways gave us plenty to look at.

Sitting in different seats and chatting with fellow paddlers, and sharing this experience was special. This was not a race. The paddle provided an opportunity for each us to work as hard or as easy as each of us wanted – one rule – stay in time.

My thanks to Rachel, Lee, Gary, Lynn, Beth, Robyn, Susan, Tracy, Lee, Sandy, Sarah for helping to realise the opportunity for ASD to be a part of competitions but also to have “adventures”.

Where to next?

Trish Jenner

The End of Season get together in June this year saw our members get together for a themed night of fun, showing their lighter sides by donning “Silly Hats”.

We celebrated club achievements at the State and National Championships and individual members achievements. Gary, Chris, Anna and Lynne were worthy joint recipients of the Coaches Award for their commitment, on and off the water, to training and improving their dragon boating skills. Daryl was awarded Club Member of The Year in recognition of his ongoing contributions to club activities throughout the season. The evening also provided members with an opportunity to acknowledge and thank committee members and coaches for their ongoing work and support throughout the past year.

A new award was introduced this year, in memory of Jennifer Letts, to recognise a club member who has stood out as a strong motivator and role model for other members.  This year’s award went to Jen herself for her resilience, role modelling and tireless support of the club despite adversity.

The evening was a fun farewell to a successful season! As we close off one season and move into the next, our primary goals will be building fitness, endurance and strength.  Let’s make this next season a winner for ASD.

See you on the water!

Medal hungry dragon boaters from across the nation descended upon Albury-Wodonga in late April 2017 for the National Championships.

Our Senior C Mixed, Senior B Womens and Premier Womens small boat crews battled it out against some fierce competition over five days of racing. The heavy fresh water proved a challenge, as were some not so pleasant conditions at times, but our paddlers showed grit, determination and put in 110%. Our crews received plenty of compliments on their  sportsmanship and professionalism on the water, and our fabulous and flamboyant Sea Dragons cheer squad made their presence known!

Congratulations to our paddlers on some stellar grand finals results:

Grand Finals Results

Silver- Senior B womens small boat 200m

Bronze- Senior B womens small boat 500m

4th- Premier womens small boat 500m

4th- Premier womens small boat 2km

5th- Senior C mixed small boat 500m

5th- Premier womens small boat 200m

We also congratulate Sue Bockmann, Sandy Beagley and Gary Dodd who were selected to be captains of the South Australian Senior C, Senior B and Premier State Crews respectively.

It was an amazing five days filled with camaraderie, joy and a whole lot of fun- Sea Dragons Roar!
